Milstein Stacks

Edu-tainment Series: Production / Post

Every day, visitors relax and delight in Bryant Park, the beautiful public park behind the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library. To the surprise of many, there is an unexpected, massive trove hidden beneath it—millions of treasures from the Library’s vast research collections, preserved in a state-of-the-art storage environment called the Milstein Research Stacks.

As part of a suite of projects for this New York City institution, including both the “Made at NYPL” series and their “Treasures” series, Surrender again partnered with the New York Public Library, this time to develop a film detailing the intricate and iconic facility as it supports millions of curious New Yorker readers annually.

  • Surrender Pictures partnered with the New York Public Library to produce institutional documentary video content exploring the Milstein Research Stacks beneath Bryant Park in New York City. The project reveals the hidden infrastructure that preserves millions of research materials supporting public access and scholarship.

The film was designed to make complex institutional systems accessible while reinforcing NYPL’s role as a steward of knowledge.Description text goes here

  • Surrender handled video production and post-production, capturing both the architectural scale and technical operations of the underground facility. Production balanced clarity and atmosphere to maintain accessibility for a broad audience.

Post-production emphasized narrative flow and visual detail, ensuring the content functioned as both educational and cinematic storytelling.

  • The film is used across the New York Public Library’s digital platforms and institutional programming, supporting public education, access, and transparency around one of the Library’s most critical research infrastructures. The content was integrated into Bloomberg Connects, where it provides visitors with contextual, behind-the-scenes insight into the Milstein Research Stacks as part of guided digital museum experiences.

Beyond the app, the film is used in on-site museum tours, educational programming, and public-facing presentations, helping orient visitors and deepen understanding of the Library’s research operations. The piece is also deployed across promotional and institutional materials, extending its reach to educators, donors, and the broader public.

Together, these applications allow the film to function as evergreen institutional storytelling, serving both in-person and remote audiences while reinforcing NYPL’s role as a steward of knowledge and public access.Description text goes here
